Frequently Asked Questions
What is traditional postpartum care?
Traditional postpartum care is a recovery-focused approach that supports mothers during the weeks after birth through intentional rest, warmth, nourishment, body support, and hands-on healing practices. Inspired by traditional Malay postpartum care, sessions may include belly binding, warming therapies, massage, herbal treatments, and recovery support designed to help mothers feel cared for during the postpartum period.
What is bengkung belly binding?
Bengkung belly binding is a traditional postpartum practice that uses a long cloth wrap to gently support the abdomen and core after birth. Many women find it helps them feel more supported and grounded during recovery. It may also encourage body awareness, posture support, and gentle abdominal compression during the healing process.

When should postpartum care begin?
Postpartum care can often begin within the first few days after birth, depending on your comfort level, birth experience, and medical clearance if needed. Some services may be more appropriate later in recovery, especially after a cesarean birth. Sessions are personalized to your stage of healing.
Can I receive care after a C-section?
Yes. Postpartum care can be adapted for mothers recovering from a cesarean birth. Sessions are modified to support comfort, rest, and gentle healing while respecting your incision and recovery timeline.
Is this medical treatment or wellness care?
Traditional postpartum care is wellness-based supportive care inspired by cultural postpartum healing practices. It is not a replacement for medical care or treatment from your physician. As a pelvic floor physical therapist, I also bring a strong understanding of postpartum recovery, movement, and pelvic health into the care experience.
How long are sessions?
Most sessions are approximately 1.5hrs long.
What should I wear during sessions?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended. Depending on the services included, you may also want a robe, nursing bra, or clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen while still helping you feel comfortable and covered.
Do I need to prepare anything at home?
Very little preparation is needed. A quiet, comfortable space to rest during your session is helpful. If any specific setup or supplies are needed, you’ll receive guidance before your appointment.
Can this support pelvic floor recovery?
Traditional postpartum care may complement pelvic floor recovery by encouraging rest, body awareness, relaxation, abdominal support, and gentle recovery practices after birth. Sessions are designed to support overall postpartum healing while respecting your individual recovery needs.
Can I receive care after miscarriage or pregnancy loss?
Yes. Gentle postpartum support is important after miscarriage or pregnancy loss. Especially if the pregnancy loss occurs in the 2nd or 3rd trimesters. Care is always approached with sensitivity, privacy, and respect for your physical and emotional healing experience.
What is your training in traditional postpartum care?
My traditional postpartum care training was completed under Salwa Salim of Birth Matron, where I was taught practices rooted in four generations of traditional Malaysian postpartum care. Including vaginal steaming and bengkung belly binding.
The services and recovery experiences offered through Healing Space PT are thoughtfully inspired by these teachings and adapted through my clinical lens as a pelvic floor physical therapist. My goal is to create a supportive postpartum experience that prioritizes what women often need most during this sensitive time: rest, warmth, hands-on care, body support, and intentional recovery after birth. Care is always personalized to your comfort level, healing stage, and individual postpartum experience.
